GIF splitter: what this tool does

Split a GIF into a reusable sequence of PNG images. This is useful for inspecting an animation, choosing stills or moving frames into another editor. Unlike a raw patch dump, every exported image contains the complete picture that should be visible at that point in time.

How to use GIF splitter

  1. Open a GIF and inspect its frame count.
  2. Choose whether to keep every frame or sample at a larger interval.
  3. Download the ZIP of numbered PNGs and the timing manifest.

Quality, timing and file size

A frame archive can be considerably larger than the original GIF because PNG images are saved independently. The browser applies a total decoded-pixel budget to protect device memory. Sampling fewer frames can make a more manageable archive. The ZIP itself is not a playable animation.

Processing happens in a browser worker, and your files are not uploaded. Start with a short animation on mobile. The tool checks file size, frame count and decoded pixels before editing; large or damaged files receive an error with a way to retry. You can cancel a running export and keep your source selection. The preview is an editing aid; download and inspect the result in its final destination because players can handle very short frame delays differently.

Frequently asked questions

Are these raw GIF patches?

No. Transparency and disposal are applied first, so each PNG is the fully rendered frame rather than a small update rectangle.

Can I extract every third frame?

Yes. Set the frame interval before export. The manifest keeps the retained order and accumulated display delays.

Why is the ZIP bigger?

Separate PNGs do not share the GIF’s frame structure or palette references. Their larger total size is expected and does not mean the source was altered.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes, in a current browser with local canvas and worker support. Mobile budgets are lower to protect memory. Choose shorter, smaller animations, and use a desktop for a larger sequence.

Does this tool upload my files?

No. Image decoding and export run on your device. This website uses analytics for page visits and tool events, but filenames, source pixels and generated frames are not sent as analytics events.
