GIF optimizer: what this tool does

Reduce the cost of an animated GIF with deliberate quality tradeoffs. Choose a smaller palette, lower dimensions or keep only every second or third frame. When a frame is skipped, its display time is carried forward so the animation does not accidentally speed up.

How to use GIF optimizer

  1. Open a GIF and inspect its source dimensions and duration.
  2. Choose a palette size and frame interval, and reduce dimensions if the destination permits it.
  3. Export and compare the actual file sizes. Keep the original if it is already smaller.

Quality, timing and file size

This tool re-encodes the animation; it is not a guaranteed lossless optimizer. Fewer colors can introduce banding, and fewer frames can make motion less smooth. Already optimized GIFs may grow after processing. The estimate is based on sampled encoded frames, while the result reports the actual bytes and percentage difference.

Processing happens in a browser worker, and your files are not uploaded. Start with a short animation on mobile. The tool checks file size, frame count and decoded pixels before editing; large or damaged files receive an error with a way to retry. You can cancel a running export and keep your source selection. The preview is an editing aid; download and inspect the result in its final destination because players can handle very short frame delays differently.

Frequently asked questions

Is optimization lossless?

No. Palette reduction, resizing and frame skipping can change the picture. The tool exposes these choices and does not promise unchanged quality.

Does skipping frames change playback speed?

No. The removed frames’ display times are added to the preceding retained frame, preserving the selected interval before any explicit speed change.

Why did my GIF get larger?

The source may already use efficient frame patches and palettes. Re-encoding full composited frames can increase size. Compare the actual result and retain the original when appropriate.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes, in a current browser with local canvas and worker support. Mobile budgets are lower to protect memory. Choose shorter, smaller animations, and use a desktop for a larger sequence.

Does this tool upload my files?

No. Image decoding and export run on your device. This website uses analytics for page visits and tool events, but filenames, source pixels and generated frames are not sent as analytics events.
